Commemorative poster

Pantayo

Calgary Folk Music Festival

This commemorative poster was designed to honor Pantayo, a Toronto based queer Filipino kulintang punk group known for their genre defying sound and powerful cultural presence. The design process began with deep research into kulintang music and Pantayo’s artistic influences, particularly their fusion of indigenous Filipino instruments with punk, electronic, and pop elements.

At the heart of the composition is the kulintang, a traditional gong instrument that anchors both their music and their identity. I illustrated it in a stylized, graphic manner to draw immediate attention while symbolizing its cultural and sonic significance. The color palette pulls from their debut album cover, using vibrant orange, green, yellows, and soft gradients to evoke the playful yet powerful energy that defines their music.

For typography, I referenced elements from Pantayo’s existing branding, adapting letterforms to balance softness with bold expression. The poster layout intentionally blends structured grid work with organic accents to mirror the group’s harmonious clash of tradition and rebellion.

Ultimately, this piece is more than a tribute. It is a visual celebration of diasporic identity, sound, and spirit, designed to resonate with audiences who recognize the beauty in both heritage and innovation.
